Dear Aislinn’s family…
My name is Sara Winter (nee Mathieson). You may or may not remember me but I went to Churchlands Primary, Churchlands High & Curtin University with your gorgeous daughter Aislinn. Unfortunately, after university our paths went in different directions and I lost contact. I sadly only heard of her battle with cancer and passing last year when I reunited with some old uni & school buddies. I was incredibly shocked and deeply saddened by the news and wanted to say (rather belatedly) how terribly sorry I was. While I wasn’t a close friend of Aislinn’s in her later years, I remember our times together in TEE Art Class and Uni and remember her to be incredibly talented and bright with a gorgeous, fun loving personality. Her loss at such a young age truly is a tragedy.
It has become clear to me in recent years that cancer doesn’t discriminate… as young adults, we are not invincible! My darling husband was diagnosed with Cancer in 2010 and while he has been incredibly lucky and come through the other side, cancer free, my fight against cancer is far from over. I have since become incredibly passionate about the lack of support services and research directed to young adults (age 18-40) affected by cancer and have started a fundraising association entitled “Cupcakes for Cancer”. Through unique “Donate & Decorate” cupcake events we aim to:
> fund vital cancer research and support programs for young adults (age 18-40)
> spread cancer awareness in young adults (age 18-40) and;
> inspire a spirit of giving & compassion in younger generations
Our website is still in production but you can find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/cupcakesforcanceraustralia.
Throughout my “Cupcakes for Cancer” journey, Aislinn has never been far from my thoughts. It is her story and others like hers that give me the motivation and inspiration to continue what I do. I wish I knew Aislinn in her final years and I wish that the work I am doing now could have been some benefit to her but instead, I hope that, in her memory, I can help others like her.
Anyway, I have felt for some time the urge to contact you, express my deepest condolences and tell you my story and this was the only avenue in which I found it possible to do so - I hope you don’t mind. I wish you the greatest success with the Aislinn Andrews Cancer Legacy.
Warm Regards
Sara Winter (nee Mathieson)
